This is an operation that involves removing three quarters of the stomach. After the operation the patient is left with a small stomach tube that is around 2cm in diameter and that has a volume of around 100mls.
This operation works mainly by reducing the appetite and the hunger of the patient as the hunger hormone is produced by the part of the stomach that is removed during sleeve gastrectomy.
Sleeve gastrectomy achieves average total weight loss of around 30% . For example, if your weight now is 20 stone, we expect it to be around 14 stone after sleeve gaastrectomy.
Sleeve gastrectomy is done as a key hole (laparoscopic) procedure. This means that in addition to achieving excellent weight loss, the recovery is quick (most patients stay in the hospital 1 night only), the pain is minimal and the risk of post surgical hernias is reduced.
Sleeve gastrectomy has a low risk of complications and is a safer operation than many other operations that are performed routinely.
Sleeve gastrectomy requires good preparation before surgery and lifelong commitment to dietary changes, taking vitamins daily, having regular blood tests and attending follow up appointments.
All Mr Toumi’s sleeve gastrectomy patients are seen by a bariatric dietitian before and after the surgery. In addition to this, many of Mr Toumi’s sleeve gastrectomy patients are seen by a bariatric psychologist before surgery.
